The Local Beet: March 2022

Green, green as far as the eye can see!
We don’t mind—it’s Edible Silicon Valley’s favorite color, after all! Reminds us of our favorite leafy foods, the lush hills after much-needed rain and the hopeful beginning to this year’s garden sprouts.

And it looks like we’re not the only ones who caught the green bug—the festivities are back on this March! This year we’re giving some love to dates, local businesses and events that celebrate the Earth and what makes March so green!

Here’s one! Mark your calendars and RSVP for Acterra’s “Promise to Our Planet” online benefit on March 25 to hear from experts about climate change solutions and how to take local climate action. Read more below.

Plus, we are ready to pique your interest and your taste buds with the start of the Edible Silicon Valley spring season, kicking off a new issue of our print magazine at the end of this month, and we’ll keep up the green living with fresh newsletters, guides and plenty more while we step into spring.

MARCH 14. PI DAY

Nothing unites mathematicians and pastry chefs like pie. (Most bakers will tell you baking is mostly math anyway, go figure!) Celebrate Pi Day by flexing your pastry muscles with famed Lynda’s Vodka Pie Crust recipe from Just Add Salt, perfect for any filling.

For those inclined to leave the baking to the pros, circle back to Alexander’s Patisserie in Mountain View or Cupertino or branch out to Pie Ranch’s Farmstand in Pescadero to pick up an infinitely delicious ready-to-serve treat for the occasion. Mmmmath!

MARCH 9-18. THE 42ND ECOFARM CONFERENCE GOES VIRTUAL

Known as one of the most influential events in the world of sustainable agriculture, the 42nd EcoFarm Conference is an essential event for agriculturalists, farmers, activists and educators. Join virtually March 9–18 for visionary keynote speakers, skill-building workshops, seed swaps, upcoming farm field days and more. Learn more here!

MARCH 18. GLOBAL RECYCLING DAY

Here’s a little recycling "Did-You-Know?" fact: Clover Sonoma was the first milk brand in the United States to launch the fully renewable plant-based milk carton back in 2020. Now they’re continuing their sustainability pledge with the first post-consumer recycled gallon milk jug—made of 30% recycled household plastic. Here’s to a more sustainable and re-moo-able future!

MARCH 20. FIRST DAY OF SPRING

Spring begins in earnest on March 20, and we’re excited to see sweet strawberries and shoots of asparagus popping up at the local farmers market. We have delicious Spring Recipes ready to make the most of this season’s bounty, like this Simple Roasted Asparagus recipe from Just Add Salt to get you started!

MARCH 25. CELEBRATE LOCAL LEADERS OF THE SUSTAINABLE FOOD SCENE

Free Online Presentation, $ Donations Taken at the Virtual Door

Care about our planet’s future? Want to learn how to take action locally? Connect with the Bay Area sustainable food community at Acterra’s “Promise to Our Planet” on March 25.

Learn more about our local climate heroes and participate in choose-your-own breakout sessions, including food waste prevention with national expert Dana Gunders of ReFED and avoiding industrial agriculture with Monica Chen of the Factory Farm Awareness Coalition. RSVP and put this on your calendar here.

MARCH 25. NEW EDIBLE SILICON VALLEY MAGAZINE INCOMING!

Who’s ready to hit the road and taste the delicious flavors of California, explore the “edible salad” growing right in their own backyard and learn about the communities preserving and sharing Indigenous cuisine and culture … all while sipping on a cool glass of cider?

Pick up a patron copy from one of our advertisers and “spring forward” to eat, drink, grow and shop local. Our favorite markets will be ready with copies arriving later this month!
