5 Steps to Picking the Perfect Pumpkin
In the coastal hills of Pescadero at the Butano Cutoff is Bianchi’s Flowers & Farm with a unique experience for those eager to step into the fields and pick pumpkins from the vine. All through October, visitors can fill a wheelbarrow with the freshest picks. Bianchi’s Farm Manager Bridget Jett shares her pumpkin-picking pointers for those pursuing edible varieties of pumpkins that come in all shapes, flavors, sizes and colors.
1. Start with the Stem
Look for a healthy, attractive dry stem that is ready for harvest. And remember—don’t use the stem for carrying! The stems can break off creating a point of rot.
2. Know Thy Rind & Kind
Traditional carving pumpkins are grown for size and have a watery, stringy flesh that is better left to the porch than the kitchen. When on the hunt for edible cooking pumpkins, look for a tough, thick rind that’s protected the delicious pumpkin within.
3. Check the Bottom & Sides
When taking a pumpkin out of the field, don't overlook the side facing the ground! A pumpkin can sit for a long period of time in damp soil and potentially lead to rotting.
4. Pick the Right Size
Don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach—pick a size that suits your cooking needs. If you do end up with extra pumpkin flesh, make sure to purée or cube any leftovers and freezer them for later.
5. Look Out for Wrinkles and Soft Spots
Keep an eye out for bruising and deep nicks on the outside. You want to pick a pumpkin that is firm all around.
