A piping-hot bowl of soup is my favorite meal in the wintertime. Sunchokes, potatoes and leeks make for a silky purée, and local rye bread makes the perfect dipper when toasted with aged Monterey Jack cheese and fennel seeds. For a winter-to-spring pairing, lighten things up with a vibrant carrot soup swirled with garlicky pea and chive pistou.

Give either of these duos a try if you’re up for a change from cream of tomato and grilled cheese!
