Some people can’t wait for Arbor Day or Earth Day every year. Some circle April on their calendar to mark the beginning of spring planting. Here at Edible Silicon Valley we’re counting down the days to the UC Master Gardeners Spring Garden Fair on April 15, a one-day sustainable gardening showcase, premier plant sale and educational fair.

By 9am, multitudes of new and experienced gardeners alike will be lining up at the UC Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden at Martial Cottle Park in San Jose. Until 2pm, gardeners will gain valuable advice on how to be more successful growers while enjoying the opportunity to purchase tomato, pepper, herb, succulent and flower seedlings for their summer gardens.

All seedlings offered for sale have been raised right here in the Santa Clara Valley and vegetable varieties have been tested for two years. Many of these varieties are not readily available elsewhere, and were selected for outstanding taste, beauty and performance in our soil and climate.

Guests will be able to sit in on expert talks about how to grow luscious tomatoes, divide succulents, grow herbs for tea or plant flowers for bouquets and pollinators. Or they can learn how to sharpen garden tools and figure out what’s wrong with their irrigation. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer all kinds of garden questions, like Why are the leaves on my peach tree curling? or What’s the trick to getting rid of aphids?

For those early birds looking for an insider’s look specifically on tomato-growing tips and the over 60 prized varieties that will be offered for sale, check out Spring Starts and Tips for Growing Tomatoes with UC Master Gardener Mary Collins, who is curating this year’s selection.

And while there will be plenty of tomato varieties, don’t miss the other heirloom seedlings offered: sweet and juicy or hot and searing peppers, plenty of herbs (including 11 kinds of basil!) and large array of short to tall sunflowers, magnificent zinnias and other flowers. Plus, peruse a rich collection of succulents, decorated bird houses and native California plants available at this one-of-a-kind, one-day Bay Area gardening event.
