A table will be set in the middle of an exceptional 107-year-old vineyard in Hecker Pass, a short distance from the start of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Farmed by three generations of the Besson family, these ungrafted Grenache vines planted in 1910 are the star attraction in Alex Krause and John Locke’s sourcing for their winery founded in 2008 in Santa Cruz. Birichino is known for making wines that revive and refresh, showing a lighter touch with a preference for native fermentations and neutral barrels that allow the striking aromatics and intensity of such old sites to shine through. Yet all is done with a certain playfulness and lightness of spirit as 'birichino' best translates to naughty in Italian. A lovely afternoon and evening, paired with talented Chef Mikey Adams of Restaurant 1833, in Monterey promises to delight and inspire.
