Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association (SCWMA), Megan Metz, told us more about the history of winegrowing in this region and what we can expect from this year's Silicon Valley Wine Auction. On April 16, 2016, attend this premier wine event at Levi's Stadium and get introduced to new winemakers that produce such rich and delicious wines around Silicon Valley...

ESV: Tell us about the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association.

The SCMWA represents 65 wineries and winegrowers of the Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation. Formed in 1981, the Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation is one of the most unique winegrowing regions in the world, beginning just south of San Francisco and spanning the mountain range between the San Francisco Bay and the Monterey Bay. Our association consists of more than 65 wineries, most of them family-run, working to promote the unique aspects of our wines & region. The small size of our wineries allows for greater attention to detail and a hand-crafted wine quality that maximizes the potential of the grapes grown here.

ESV: 2016 marks the second annual Silicon Valley Wine Auction—a collaboration with the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association—benefiting SVEF. Can you share with us what to expect at the event?

Attendees can expect great food and excellent wines. The Silicon Valley Wine Auction (SVWA) will feature over 40 Santa Cruz Mountains vintners showcasing their world-class, hand-crafted wines, over 200 luxury goods auction lots, and an expertly paired wine dinner. The SCMWA is proud to support Silicon Valley Education Foundation through the SVWA. We’re looking forward to another successful year.

ESV: Are there other new initiatives for 2016?

This year we added a trade tasting to the event, which was on March 7 at the Press Club in SF. Currently, the Wine Auction is quite the little undertaking. However, we will be looking to add another new Signature event to SCMWA's line-up in 2018.
