With the backdrop of our rolling hills and valleys and majestic coastline, long summer days in Silicon Valley summon our California calling for outdoor living. Whether planting a garden, dining al fresco, exploring new areas or enjoying the simple pleasure of picnicking with friends, the choices we make on how and where to spend our time feed this urge to be outdoors.

In this issue, we share with you a Bay Area summer of unexpected outdoor discoveries: delicious local food and drink adventures for day trips, warm starry night entertaining and family fun.

For a little picnic inspiration, we have a fork-free menu to savor—or consider a Highway 1 foodie road trip. If you don’t mind getting hands on, there’s sea foraging or our local U-Pick farm guide. This summer also offers new market-style outdoor dining options that highlight what’s fresh and seasonal.

Gardening takes center stage with seeds to check out from local public libraries, a kids’ farmers market and a look at the Victory Garden at Filoli. And a host of activities—farm-to-table restaurant events, garden and cooking courses, art and wine celebrations and summer festivals—are featured, with more online at EdibleSiliconValley.com.

Spend time with our Edible Insider Guide to Local Wine and discover the rich 215-year history and unique tasting experiences of over 100 award-winning wineries rooted right here. We explore winemakers and wineries, and give you a peek at some of the premier wine trails and tasting spots in our region to inspire you to make plans for a winery day trip or Friday night flight tasting.

So enjoy our local summer bounty: watermelon and berries at farmers markets, picnics at the beach and wine tasting here in our local region. And experience the joy of nibbling and serving out of our own gardens, big and small. One thing is for sure: Food and drink taste better in the great outdoors.
