Pick up either from her San Jose kitchen, College of San Mateo Farmers’ Market, or at Chromatic Coffee.

Little Sky Bakery

A Palo Alto popup turned storefront, Little Sky Bakery’s loaves and pastries can be purchased from their two storefronts in Menlo Park and Los Altos. Stop in to try their black sesame or olive rosemary loaves, and stay to try daily samples of some long time favorites and new baking experiments.

Manresa Bread

Enjoy artisanal sourdough and pastries crafted with house-milled flour and traditional techniques from this bakery born from the late three-Michilen star Manresa restaurant. Pick up one of their baguettes or monkey breads for the road with a cup of expertly crafted coffee, and be sure to check back frequently for seasonal offerings.

As Kneaded Bakery

Woman-founded artisanal bakery specializing in bread loaves using organic ingredients, ancient grains, and delicious and nutritious flour mixes. Take home a loaf of some of their more unique offerings like their Honey Rye Porridge loaf, and don’t forget to pick up some “noshes” on your trip—sweet or savory snacks like cookies, crumbles, babkas and danishes. Offers seasonal specials.

Backhaus

Signature sourdough loaves, pastries, pretzels made with German inspiration. Artisanal hearth loaves are perfect for serving at the dinner table, but we keep coming back to the sandwich-ready Seeded Rye and Whole Wheat Sesame loafs for homemade lunches. Backhaus also serves a tasty breakfast menu Fridays through Sundays.

Pie Ranch

Farm and farm stand selling a seasonal rotation of goods from local farmers, makers and more. Some choice favorites include jams, jellies, sauces, dried heirloom beans, tasty unusual grains and—most famously—pies! All baked fresh from their partner Companion Bakeshop. Local beef is also available in partnership with LeftCoast Grassfed Ranchers. Open daily, closed Tuesdays.

Flower Flour

You’d have to live in Willow Glen to know about Flower Flour. This tiny, beloved French café, bakery and flower shop is tucked away in a 100-year-old building, four blocks off the main thoroughfare of Lincoln Avenue, on Willow Street.

Residents come here regularly for house-made French pastries, savory soups and crepes. Some come as a matter of tradition—every Christmas Eve morning, my daughter meets up with her former high school French teacher here for cappuccino and a sugar-dusted morning roll.
