Celebrate Edible Earth Day From Home
Here are five ideas to inspire your Edible Earth Day action plan #EdibleEarthDay—most linked to local stories in this issue that are fresh from the farm.
All are good for the planet, good for the soil and, wonderfully, good for you!
1. Know your local sources
Support family farmers who use regenerative, organic farming practices. Sign up for a CSA or ask your market to source from healthy, clean, local farms and label the results. Read about Peninsula Open Space Trust’s protection and revitalization of farms along the San Mateo County coast with their Farmland Futures initiative to keep local farms thriving and cultivating good, clean and fair-trade food.
2. Taste the difference
Patronize businesses and restaurants that highlight local, organic farms and seasonal ingredients. In this issue, we celebrate three chefs doing just that. And discover local wines and explore how to taste their terroir in our Edible SV Spring magazine (digital edition). Or find out how to takeout wine and cocktails with your local restaurant deliveries in our new online story by Mary Orlin.
3. Get your hands dirty
Plant an edible garden, shrub or tree and compost your green scraps, be it in your own compost bin or through your waste management service. Consider a neighborhood beehive or yard farm share stand.
4. Stay smart about food and farms
Rent a movie documentary like The Biggest Little Farm or The Pollinators, or read a book like Grain by Grain by Bob Quinn and Liz Carlisle or The Fate of Food by Amanda Little. You’ll never look at buying a carrot, grains or an apple the same way again.
5. Eat seasonally and spring forward
Get the bead on the star picks for Bay Area spring produce: peas, fava beans, artichokes, mixed greens and strawberries. Hear from the local farm stars and star farmers who grow them.
Make every bite count!
