The holiday season will be different this year, but we say it can be an opportunity to share your table and support independent local businesses, farms, restaurants, first line workers and families hit hard by a life-changing year. Shopping local and supporting our food community and families in need has never, ever, been more important.

In the spirit of giving and helping our Bay Area community–from farms to families—we offer some ideas and inspirations that will directly feed and impact local families, local workers, local servers and local businesses.

Shop local, buy local, give local. Bring on the community cheer!

Give Now to Address Local Hunger

With the pandemic and economic hardship, the need to feed families, seniors and kids is greater than ever this holiday season. Many local organizations through churches, schools and non-profits have been overwhelmed, and they need your $ donations and volunteer help now. During this time of great need, please consider donating to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Martha’s Kitchen, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, Fresh Approach or other organizations that are working to feed locals less fortunate.

A thank you to our Edible subscribers who donated the remainder of their print magazine subscriptions for 2020 to help Edible Silicon Valley make a $1000 contribution to the Silicon Valley Second Harvest Food Bank. And best of all, contributions made before December 25th are going to be matched, making our collective contribution a whopping $2,000 to feed local families in need this season!

Pickup Your Support of Independent Community Restaurants

Got one or two good food restaurants you rely on to feed your families and celebrations, who work to source locally, act sustainably and nourish our community? Put them on your Local Love gift list! And don’t forget to help the good work many are doing to feed frontline workers and staff. Chefs and restaurants are offering ready-to-serve dishes and holiday delights, available for both pickup and delivery. Might we give you a nudge to “pick up” your meal versus schedule delivery? Your extra effort to pick up adds 25-30% of the bill directly back to the restaurant and staff.

Another tip of the season: Support restaurants by buying gift certificates for that future Covid-free celebration, and fill the tip jar by adding funds to the many restaurant Holiday Staff Fund collections where your extra dollars can “feed it forward.”

Buying Local Ingredients Makes for Great Stories & Local Lore

Considered essential, both for the locals and local businesses, farmers markets across the Bay Area from California Farmers Markets, Pacific Coast Farmers Markets and Urban Farmers Markets are still open. Take advantage of the outdoor California winter sunshine, and extra safety measures at these Bay Area markets, to let you buy and bring this season’s freshest, local farm ingredients to your table.

Look for the “buy local” signage at Community markets like Draeger’s and Bianchinni’s who are purveyors and promoters of small local farms, makers, spirits, wines, fresh beauty and wellness products and gifts. Shop wines from award-winning favorites Testarossa, or one of family wineries in the Santa Clara Valley or Santa Cruz Mountain AVAs.

Doorbell Dish (A Tastier Version of Doorbell Ditch) Never Looked So Delicious

Last but not least, be a good neighbor. If you are baking, caking or making a special treat, or picking out of your garden something sweet–we invite you to share it with neighbors. Many people are shut in or living alone this season, so reach out! Leave your own homemade delights on a porch with your contact name because knowing where your food comes is always important. "Doorbell Dish" never sounded so welcoming or delicious. We hope you agree!

Cheers to spreading a little Edible local love and joy this season!
