The Local Beet: June

The first day of summer—and the longest day of the year—is June 20. This year it falls on the same day as Father’s Day! The mild weather beckons us to get outside, socialize with friends again, plant gardens, break routines, plan vacations. There’s much to celebrate this month—and here are some ideas to get you into the swing of summer right now.

VISIT. FILOLI'S SUMMER SEASON IS IN FULL SWING

We think you’ll want to visit Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside several times this summer. Special weekend festivities include celebrations of Pride, wine and local artists. New exhibits recreate memorable gatherings in the house and showcase new fruits, vegetables and herbs in the garden.

There’s even a "Dynasty" theme night—recognizing the popular TV series filmed there. Evening admissions are offered every Thursday. Learn more here

SHOP. DOWNTOWN MOUNTAIN VIEW ADDS SECOND FARMERS' MARKET

The popular Mountain View farmers market will now be open twice a week, with a new second location! Starting June 3, you can shop for farm-fresh produce every Thursday night from 5 to 8pm at California and Bryant Streets, in addition to the regular Sunday market at the Caltrain station.

Spend a lovely evening restocking your favorite fresh produce and enjoying family fun with promotional events. More California Farmers’ Markets Association locations here.

EAT. 10 LOCAL RESTAURANTS IN ONE EASY ORDER

Local Kitchens—a digital food hall bringing some of the best Bay Area restaurants together under one roof—is now open in Cupertino. That means you can order takeout or delivery from multiple top restaurants like Señor Sisig, Curry Up Now, and SAJJ Mediterranean, all in the same order. Order online and get $10 off your first meal.

GROW. GARDENING ADVICE TO GROW BY

Want advice on what vegetables grow best in Silicon Valley? Help in getting rid of powdery mildew on your zucchini plant? How about a class on cut-flower gardening, pest control or cover crops?

The UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County are ready to help, with a variety of gardening classes all month and ton of information on their website. They even have a monthly call-in plant clinic—this month it’s on June 12. Get growing!
