Nestled between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz off Highway 1 is the Peninsua Open Space Trust (POST) protected Cloverdale Coastal Ranch, a 6,873 acre property comprised of coastal grasslands, redwood and Douglas fir forest, and chaparral. Nearly 1,000 acres of the property is managed using holistic grazing practices in partnership with Markegard Family Grass-fed, a local ranching family that provides locally raised, grass-fed beef, lamb, pork, chicken, and dairy.

Like many California ranchers, the Markegards must manage invasive species within the grasslands to maintain quality forage for their animals. In particular, thistles can impact grassland health and diversity. Join us in our long-term efforts to manage non-native plants on Cloverdale. Bring a shovel, closed-toed shoes, a water bottle, as well as your family!

In addition to restoring our local rangeland with the Markegards, volunteers will have an opportunity to hear about sustainable ranching in the Bay Area and how POST protects our coastal ranches and farms. Local Markegard grass-fed beef, lamb, and pork will be available for pre-order with a special POST volunteer discount!
