If asked what is my favorite beverage, my kids would tell you it’s a fresh-fruit “mocktail,” often consisting simply of a fragrant slice of lime and sparkling water garnished with mint from my garden. Or a tall, iced glass of water with lightly muddled strawberries and blackberries ready to be eaten after I quench my thirst with the cool, infused elixir—ahhh!

Once you’ve lived with the abundant fruits available every season in the Bay Area, every beverage suddenly has the opportunity to be one of inspiration, eye candy and refreshment.

Whether you prefer to mix, muddle, sip, swirl or just enjoy a tall glass of milk, this issue brings out the best in local beverages—beer, wine, craft cocktails, coffee and non-alcoholic sippers—across our region. And we’ve discovered some perfect food pairings and seasonal recipes for you to try from local artisans and businesses, or to create in your own kitchens and from your gardens. Plus, we’ve blended in some stories and resources to help you find your inner springtime—a recharge after winter’s chill. To this mix we add some refreshing new ways to eat, drink, grow and think about local food.

We continue in our shared goal to be part of a healthier, sustainable community. Along the way, let’s enjoy the fun and camaraderie of sharing good food and drink with others!

With that, I propose this toast to our readers, advertisers and local businesses: “May you live life at its freshest.” And to my kids and fellow mocktail aficionados: “Eat your garnish!”

Raise your glass!
